A lipoma is a benign, soft, slow-growing tumour of fat just below the skin. Removal is recommended if it is painful, enlarging, cosmetically bothersome or of uncertain diagnosis. Small, superficial lipomas can be removed under local anaesthetic through a small incision, while large or deep lipomas may require regional or general anaesthetic; all removed tissue is sent for histology to confirm the diagnosis.
